35mm Compact

Compact cameras are available in a wide variety of configurations, from simple fixed focus models to full-featured, autofocus, zoom and multi-program versions that come close to SLR performance.

Simple versions have fixed focus and are suitable for simple photography.

Moving up in price come autofocus compacts, typically with motorised film advance and several flash and exposure programs.

At the top end of the range are the compact zoom cameras offering zoom ranges extending from 35mm up to 140mm, significantly longer than the standard lens of many SLR cameras.

Many of today's compacts incorporate a Panorama setting, capable of turning a very ordinary landscape shot into something quite stunning.
