Film Speed

Film speed is rated in ISO numbers.

The lower the number the less sensitive the film is to light.

The higher the number the more sensitive the film is to light.

  • Slow Speed Films ISO 25 to 100 give very sharp fine grain results. Ideal for enlargements.
  • Medium Speed Film ISO 200 to 400 are good all round films suitable for most subjects.
  • Fast Speed Film ISO 800 to 3200 are used for hand held photography in low light or action pictures. Tend to be grainy with less saturated colours and not suitable for big enlargements.

Film Types

Film is a very important component in picture taking. Therefore it is extremely important to choose the correct type of film whether it be colour print film, black & white print film or even infrared print film. You may find that colour slide film is the choice for you. However, if you enjoy displaying your photos to a larger audience... then why not experiment with slide/transparency film?!

Film is available in THREE different types, which can be readily used in your 35mm compact or SLR camera.

Film Formats

Instant Film

Available in the following brands and range:

  • Polaroid Image Spectra
  • Polaroid 600 Extreme Gloss
  • Polaroid I-ZONE sticker film discontinued
  • Polaroid Vision 500 (to suit Joycam) discontinued
  • Polaroid 1200
  • Fuji INSTAX (suits Fuji INSTAX cameras only)

APS Film

If you own an APS camera, you will require the special format APS. The film cassette is slimmer and more compact than 35mm film. The APS film is also fully contained within the cassette and there are multiple magnetic strips. However, it is not possible to put APS film into a 35mm camera.

The advantage of APS format is the three print options available. The print format you desire can be chosen at the time of taking the shot or at the processing stage.

  • C: Classic standard size - 4x6"
  • H: 'Full Frame' - 4x7"
  • P: Panorama print - 4x10"

An index print is included when you receive your finished prints, which allows you to identify shots easily if a reprint is needed. The shots can then be reprinted in one of the three formats. The negatives remain inside the film canister, protected from any harmful dust or fingerprints. Enlargements are also available varying in size from 5x7" to 16x20"

APS film is available in the following brands:

  • Kodak Advantix (25 exp) in 200, 200HD, 400 ISO
  • Fuji Nexia (25 / 40 exp) in 200 and 400 ISO

Infrared Film

Considered a special effects film. It requires care when being used. Firstly, infrared film must be loaded into the camera in complete darkness. Special attention must be paid to the temperature while you are using the film. Fluctuations in temperature are detrimental to infrared film, so is any exposure to sunlight, which is a saturated source of radiation. Infrared film, when used correctly, gives quite dramatic results. We stock Kodak High Speed Infrared Film in colour and B&W.

Photo CD

If you want to be able to insert your photos on to your personal computer, you can have your 35mm negatives or slides scanned onto a CD.

The images are scanned at the standard resolution of 1200x1800 pixels @ 300dpi. The final image data file is approximately the total information of a 35mm negative or slide. If you require a non-standard size scan, or a higher resolution scan, we advise that you first consult with our Developing & Processing staff to ensure you receive the best results!

Transferring your images onto CD allows you to manipulate them using various software packages. This is also an alternative way of storing and archiving your precious photographs.
