Gadget Bags - An Introduction
Photographic equipment including cameras, lenses & flashguns are all very fragile. The odd bump or knock can cause significant damage to the internal mechanisms, which are comprised of delicate electronic componentry or/and to the external body of the equipment.
Lenses optics can get easily scratched and the lens barrels can easily be damaged causing poor zoom movement and focusing issues.
Camera bags keep cameras, lenses, filters, media storage devices and accessories separate from each other.
Most bags come with Velcro adjustable compartments, which allow you to configure the bag to your own equipment, and to keep that equipment separated.
It is likely over time that you will find that you need different bags for different uses:
Smaller bag to carry minimal equipment for example a snoot bag to carry your SLR body with a short zoom lens
Medium sized bag to carry your SLR body with a variety of lenses, telephoto, wide, macro, battery charger and accessories
Backpack style bag is very useful where you are carrying a larger amount of equipment over large distances or difficult terrain. Fully waterproof backpacks are also available.
Roller style bag to readily allow you to readily transport heavy equipment with relative ease.In circumstances where your equipment is likely to be packed as luggage or be subjected to extreme conditions hard cases are available. These are most commonly made of tough plastic or aluminium with either dividers or foam inserts which can be tailored to your equipment. Waterproof models are also an option.
Accessibility and comfort are also a consideration. Consider whether you will be comfortable carrying your equipment simply over your shoulder or perhaps a waist pack would be more suitable. The style of bag will dictate the accessibility to your equipment and this in turn will be dependant on your anticipated circumstances. A backpack will need to be taken off and laid on the ground to access equipment whilst a shoulder or waist bag can be accessed directly.
Many photographers now carry their laptops with their equipment. A number of bags
are now available that will allow you to pack and protect your laptop together with your photographic equipment.
